Targeted audience

Our approach is interdisciplinary, and hence we welcome all breast professionals from many disciplines:

  • radiologists

  • medical oncologists

  • surgeons

  • pathologists

  • radiation oncologists

  • general practitioners

  • nurses

  • dosimetrists

  • technologists

    General objectives

    At the end of The Breast Course, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify state-of-the-art advances in detection, intervention and therapy for breast cancer; and

  • Integrate most recent practice guidelines for small, image detected breast cancer in his/her daily practice

    In particular, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the major pathologies affecting the breast;

  • Explain existing, novel and state-of-the-art breast imaging techniques;

  • Describe appropriate procedures for stereotactic, U/S, or MRI guided minimally invasive breast biopsy;

  • Describe surgical management approaches of breast cancer; and

  • Explain current procedures in post-interventional chemotherapy, brachytherapy and radiotherapy.

    Specific objectives

    At the end of specific plenaries the participants will be able to:

  • Implement guidelines for the follow-up of high risk subjects

  • Utilize the definitive histologic diagnosis provided by percutaneous breast biopsy to reduce the number of surgeries required for diagnosis and therapy

  • Utilize diagnostic information to optimally select the right therapy course

  • Evaluate options for energy delivery via accelerated partial breast irradiation or breast brachytherapy

    At the end of the Practicum workshops participants will be able to:

  • Detect breast pathologies using conventional imaging technologies (mammography; ultrasound; magnetic resonance imaging)

  • Evaluate the impact and usefulness of other imaging technologies in the diagnostic procedure (near infra red; breast tomography; elastography)

  • Select and utilize the appropriate sampling and guidance systems for optimal histological diagnosis when performing minimally invasive breast biopsy
